Help learners understand why safety matters
A learner may be able to repeat a safety rule. What matters on site is recognising when to apply it, understanding why it exists and having the confidence to speak up.
That is the thinking behind Ethos Direct's health and safety teaching resources.
Two backgrounds, one shared purpose
Ethos Direct was founded by Paul and Sarah, bringing together construction teaching and extensive experience in learning and development.
As a college lecturer, Paul struggled to find authentic, quality videos that showed his students the work he was explaining. So together they started designing learning outcomes and filming tradespeople on construction sites and in workshops, creating their own footage around the details learners needed to see.
Across their different industries, they had seen the same challenge: rules only protect people when they understand their purpose and choose to put them into practice. They want people new to construction to understand why health and safety regulations exist, rather than seeing them as a tick-box exercise or an obstacle to getting the job done. Their aim is to encourage learners to work safely because it matters and feel confident speaking up when something doesn't feel right on site. They created Ethos Direct to help educators make that connection.
From watching to understanding
A video gives learners something concrete to discuss. The teaching around it helps them examine what they have seen.
What is the risk? Why is that precaution necessary? What would you do in that situation?
Our videos and supporting materials are designed to help tutors open up those conversations, check understanding and revisit areas where learners need more support.
Our health and safety collection
The collection includes 35 videos across 15 curriculum units, with tutor slides, guidance notes and student worksheets to support delivery.
The materials give teaching teams a shared foundation for health and safety lessons across construction trades. Tutors can use the footage to introduce a topic, the supporting activities to involve learners and the worksheets to check their understanding.

Meet Paul and Sarah
Paul brings the judgement of an experienced tradesperson and college lecturer to every video, identifying the practical details learners need to see and the key points for discussion.
Together, Paul and Sarah define what each lesson should equip learners to understand and do. Sarah draws on her experience of designing and evaluating learning programmes to develop activities, worksheets and tutor guidance around those goals.
For educators, that means a complete teaching package grounded in trade expertise, with clear lesson objectives, purposeful activities and ways to assess learners' understanding.
